Amazon Route 53 is a scalable and highly available Domain Name System (DNS) web service. It can be configured to log information about the queries it receives, which is useful for security and troubleshooting.

Enabling Route 53 Logging

To read Route 53 logs, you first need to create a logging configuration for the hosted zones you want to monitor. This involves defining the queries you want to log and selecting a destination, such as Amazon CloudWatch Logs or an Amazon S3 bucket.

For example, to enable logging for a hosted zone to CloudWatch Logs, you can use AWS CLI:

Reading Route 53 Logs

Once logging is enabled and you have logs flowing to CloudWatch or S3, you can begin analyzing the data. A sample log entry in CloudWatch might look like this:

In this example, 192.0.2.1 indicates the source IP address, 10 refers to the time it took Route 53 to respond (in milliseconds), DNS-Query is the type of query, example.com. is the queried domain, A is the record type, IN indicates the query class, NOERROR is the response code, and the last two numbers represent the size of the request and response in bytes.

AWS WAF Logs

The AWS Web Application Firewall (WAF) helps protect your web applications from common web exploits. AWS WAF logs provide detailed information about the web requests that come to your web application.

Enabling AWS WAF Logging

To enable AWS WAF logging, configure the logging destination in the AWS Management Console or through the AWS CLI and link it to a Kinesis Data Firehose, which will deliver logs to an S3 bucket.

Reading AWS WAF Logs

AWS WAF logs each contain a wealth of information about the individual web requests. A sample log entry might look like:

Here, timestamp is the time when AWS WAF received the request, webaclId identifies the Web ACL, terminatingRuleId tells you which rule matched (or Default_Action if no rule matched), terminatingRuleType indicates what type of rule it is (regular, rate-based, or group), action shows what action was taken (ALLOW or BLOCK), and httpSourceId and httpSourceName identify the source of the traffic.

VPC Flow Logs

VPC Flow Logs capture information about the IP traffic going to and from network interfaces in your VPC.

Enabling VPC Flow Logs

To enable VPC Flow Logs, you must create a flow log for a VPC, subnet, or network interface and specify the destination for the logs, which can be CloudWatch Logs or S3.

For instance, to create a VPC Flow Log that publishes to CloudWatch Logs:

Reading VPC Flow Logs

A VPC Flow Log record can look like:

The record includes a version number, the account ID, the interface ID, the source and destination addresses, the source and destination ports, the protocol number, the number of packets, the number of bytes, the start and end time of the capture window, and the log status. The actions can be either ACCEPT or REJECT.
