7. Generalize the VM

The next step is to generalize the VM to remove any unique machine-specific information. This prepares the VM to be used as a template for creating multiple virtual desktop instances. Open a command prompt as an administrator on the VM and run the following command:

sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown

8. Capture the VM as a managed image

In the Azure portal, go to the “Virtual machines” section and locate the VM you just prepared. Follow these steps:

  • Click on “Capture” to create a managed image from the VM.
  • Provide a name and specify the resource group and storage account where the image should be stored.

9. Create a virtual desktop pool

With the golden image ready, you can proceed to create a virtual desktop pool using Azure Virtual Desktop. This pool will use the golden image as a baseline for all the virtual desktop instances it creates.
