The Importance of Education in Driving Change

Educating your workforce about the benefits of change and how it will positively impact the organization is crucial in driving change successfully. Without this understanding, resistance to change is inevitable.

Consider this example. An organization aims to transition from a traditional waterfall project management method to adopting Agile practices. The benefits of Agile – faster delivery, enhanced flexibility, stronger stakeholder engagement – are many, but these are meaningless if the team does not understand them and how to apply the principles correctly. Therefore, holding workshops, training sessions, or even formal Agile certification like PMI-ACP will significantly aid in this knowledge transfer.

Influencing Processes

In Agile, change is not considered as a hindrance. Instead, it is welcomed and managed efficiently. Here, it’s important to remember that processes themselves should be agile. They need to be continually evaluated and adjusted to better align with the organization’s goals and the team’s capabilities.

For instance, adopting Agile doesn’t mean discarding all existing processes and protocols. It means tweaking them or molding them to support the Agile way of working. If your current process involves extensive documentation, transition to a lighter documentation process, focusing more on working software, as per Agile principles.

Influencing Behaviors

Influencing behaviors mainly deal with cultivate an Agile mindset within the organization. Change at this level is deeply personal and involves shifting the employee mindset from ‘following instructions’ to ‘delivering value through self-organization and collaboration’.

This can be challenging, especially in organizations with a deeply ingrained hierarchical culture. An effective way to influence behavior is through modeling it. Agile leaders should embody Agile values, thus serving as role models for their teams.

Influencing People

Influencing people is about creating positive engagement, commitment, and acceptance of change. Constant communication, transparent leadership, rewarding agile behaviors, a safe and trusting environment where employees are not afraid to make mistakes are some ways to influence people.
